Once Home to America’s Largest Granite Manufacturer

The Vermont Granite Museum is located on property once owned and operated by the Jones Brothers Company, at one time America’s largest granite manufacturer. The museum grounds consist of 11.5 acres of land with trails, sculptures, archaeological ruins, a 1949 diesel locomotive, and access to the Stevens Branch of the Winooski River.

The Jones Brothers Company shed #1, built in 1895, contains the museum’s archive, office, exhibits, auditorium, stage, gift shop, and Stone Arts School. The nearly 28,000-square-foot granite shed is also home to the Barre Granite Association, a trade organization that has represented Vermont’s granite industry since 1889.

Accessibility

The public spaces, exhibitions, and programs at the Vermont Granite Museum are designed to be accessible to visitors with disabilities. Oversized designated parking spaces are available near the museum entrance. Service animals are welcome in the museum and on its grounds. The museum building and grounds, including its restrooms, are accessible to wheelchair users and other visitors.

The museum’s walking trails are packed crushed granite and soil and may not be usable by wheelchairs during inclement weather. Wheelchairs and canes are available for use free of charge within the museum building on a first-come, first-served basis. Select exhibition materials are available in large print transcripts, audio files, and as hands-on objects.
